One of our favourite weekend activities as we go into spring is giving our houseplants new homes, winter can be tough for our little friends so giving them a new home to grow in as the weather gets warmer is always on our to do list. Tip No.1 Drainage

Always add drainage! We like to use perlite for this as its lightweight and helps drainage – avoiding damaging water build up. No one wants a soggy bottom, especially your most precious houseplants. I always have a tendency to overwater my house plants – adding drainage to the pot allows any excess to not get taken in by the soil straight away and avoid root rot.

Tip No.2 Choose a Good Soil

Indoor plants can be so fussy but you can’t go wrong with a lightweight mix for indoor plants – outdoor soil can be too heavy + has the chance of containing bugs. We recommend using an indoor potting mix and customising to your plants preferred likes with materials such as perlite, sphagnum moss and coir. We used a regular indoor potting mix for these fittonia white tigers.

Tip No.3 Choosing your plants

To choose our plants we stick to categories. For example, we may pair a fern with another fern but not with a succulent due to the difference in moisture requirements. When choosing number of plants odd numbers rule! Depending on size of pot we stick to 1s, 3s and 5s – for this pot we only needed one plant however in larger pots we may choose 3 succulents bunched together – we think this gives it a structured look. Neat, huh.

Tip No.4 Getting the right pot

We love a good pot selection, our favourites include the Chive collection with built in drainage – great for planting straight into and plants that don’t like to be wet. Another favourite are the low tembesi planters – these gold planters add a touch of glamour to your decor and they look great with succulents, a win win situation!

Tip No.5 Decorative gravel

Decorative gravel is another way to aid drainage for your plants. We suggest using a chunky gravel on top so when watered not all the water sits in the same spot – avoiding root rot and giving your plant extra humidity. Shake it up by adding a number of different types of gravel – this not only helps your plants but gives your planter an interesting look, adding a bit of texture.

Tip No.6 Location Location Location!

Now you have your beautiful looking planter the next step is deciding where it should go! We recommend light windowsills or as a table centrepiece – especially for light loving succulents. Adding planted planters to your decor is a great way to add light colour to your spring interiors and welcoming in sun and new growth.
